Gina Matarazzo, “Mouses and Other Feets”
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 26th, 6-8pm.
October 26th – December 1, 2024.
Haven Gallery is pleased to present “Mouses and Other Feets”, a solo show of new work from New Jersey based artist Gina Matarazzo. “Mouses and Other Feeds” is Matarazzo’s third solo show at the gallery and features ten new oil paintings of small mammals exuding personality as they conduct in the business of indulging in snacks, playing music and going on adventures. Continuing her exploration of miniature art, Matarazzo paints detailed narratives of lilliputian critters as they are out and about in their tiny worlds, bringing humor and joy to those around them.
Artist Statement:
What is it about a sweet little mouse that is delightful to see on one level, but frightening on another, should you find one sitting on your nose unexpectedly in the morning while waking up in bed?
Small mammals have captured our imaginations for decades. Why have mice been made into heroes in books and popular culture?
I think it’s partly because most of us like an underdog. We like for the small fellow to win, to show cleverness and moxie. It’s common for humans to sometimes feel insignificant and like we can’t change things. So, rooting for the little mouse to snatch his food from a maze, or outrun a cat or dog, just makes us feel like we will be OK if such a little being can prevail.
In my show, “Mouses, and Other Feets”, I play with our co-existence with small mammals, weaving the human and natural world together, with a little whimsy, a dash or twenty of poetic license, and a LOT of color.
I hope my little cast of characters brings you good cheer!
