Yuriko Shirou, “The Dark Room”
Opening Reception: August 31st, 6-8 pm
August 31st – September 29th, 2019
Haven Gallery is pleased to present “The Dark Room”, a solo show of new paintings by self taught, Mexican illustrator, Yuriko Shirou. “The Dark Room” is Shirou’s first solo show outside of Mexico and will consist of twelve new paintings encompassing watercolor, acrylic, gouache, ink, marker, pastel and colored pencils. Shirou’s imagery is heavily inspired by fairytales and often depicts the darker side of these stories as well as her own uniquely developed narratives. The artists use of contrast and sepia tones strikes an illuminating yet antiqued depiction of her sitters as they subtly pose and engage their telling environments. Her use of mixed media techniques provide depth and conveys a wide range of emotion. These visual explorations embrace fears and anxieties but also cast a light on the darkest of moments to show off the beauty lurking within.
